Steinert non-drive bearing failure and repair

Date published: January 17, 2022

EPMS Limited recently completed the repair of a Steinert drum magnet at our state-of-the-art workshop in Birmingham. This impressive drum, measuring 2800mm wide and 1800mm in diameter and weighing over 19 tonnes, underwent a complete overhaul to restore it to peak performance.
The repair process began with fixing the drum skin and removing all coils for re-insulation, ensuring they met the original electrical insulation specifications. The drum arrived at our facility following a non-drive end bearing failure, which necessitated the manufacturing and installation of a new shaft.
To enhance reliability, we replaced both large bearings, consistent with our recommendation of changing bearings every 3–4 years of magnet use to prevent similar issues. The reassembly process included the use of new bolts and seals, installation of a new terminal box, and rigorous testing to confirm performance.
Thanks to these extensive repairs, the drum magnet is now fully operational and ready to resume heavy-duty service. EPMS Limited remains committed to providing high-quality repairs that extend the life of essential equipment for our clients.
