Transformer overhauled for TATA Steel

Date published: January 22, 2022

EPMS Limited recently completed the successful overhaul of a 1.5 MVA transformer for TATA Steel at one of their large steelmaking facilities. The transformer was carefully removed and transported to our Birmingham works for a comprehensive strip-down and refurbishment.
The process began with draining the oil and removing the radiators. The windings were then de-tanked and thoroughly inspected, both mechanically and electrically. Upon inspection, we found that the transformer’s tanks were leaking and badly rusted, particularly at the bottom and around the base.
To restore the unit, we removed the old base and fabricated a new one. We also addressed areas of concern around the radiators and fixing points, ensuring all gaskets were replaced. The high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) boxes were cleaned and prepared for new cabling.
Once the necessary repairs were completed, the transformer was reassembled, filled with oil, and given a fresh coat of primer and top gloss paint for protection. After final checks, the transformer was delivered back to the customer, awaiting installation.
This project demonstrates EPMS Limited’s expertise in transformer refurbishment and our commitment to providing high-quality service to meet the needs of industrial clients.
